Puppy 101: Essential Tips for New Puppy Owners

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. And, it's hard! Nobody mentions that bit. Having a tiny land shark attacking your toes every time you move & having something keep you up all night isn't fun. I've complied some of the best tips I wish I had as a new puppy parent below so you can be prepared and equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide the best care for your furry friend. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate the journey of puppy parenthood!

  1. Puppy-Proof Your Home:

Before bringing your new puppy home, make sure to puppy-proof your living space. Remove any potential hazards such as toxic plants, electrical cords, small objects, and household chemicals that could pose a danger to your curious pup.

2.Create a Safe Space:

Set up a designated area in your home where your puppy can feel safe and secure. This could be a crate, playpen, or gated area where they can rest, eat, and play without any interruptions.

3.Establish a Routine:

Dogs thrive on routine, so establish a consistent daily schedule for feeding, potty breaks, playtime, and training sessions. This will help your puppy feel more secure and confident in their new environment. Check out our INSERT PUPPY ROUTINE BLOG POST LINK for a simple to follow, recommended, puppy routine.

4.Start Training Early:

5.Socialize Your Puppy:

Expose your puppy to different people, animals, sights, and sounds from a young age to help them develop into well-rounded and confident adult dogs. Puppy socialization classes can be a great way to safely introduce your pup to new experiences.

6.Provide Proper Nutrition:

Feed your puppy a balanced and nutritious diet that is appropriate for their age, size, and breed. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best type of food and feeding schedule for your puppy's individual needs.

7.Schedule Veterinary Visits:

Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for monitoring your puppy's health and ensuring they receive timely vaccinations, deworming, and parasite prevention treatments. Schedule your puppy's first veterinary visit as soon as possible after bringing them home.

8. Be Patient and Consistent:

Remember that raising a puppy takes time, patience, and consistency. Be prepared for accidents, setbacks, and challenges along the way, but stay positive and committed to providing the best care for your furry companion.
